Overview
U-Haul International wanted to replace more than 5,000 computers installed throughout
its North American truck rental shop locations, repair facilities and public storage buildings.
Challenge
U-Haul had needs for several different hardware configurations, as well as eight different
software image loads. Each hardware and software version needed to be identifiable externally for ease of
installation. U-Haul had concerns about managing the logistics of so many variations in configuration,
given its thousands of stores and three distinctly different user groups.
Solution
Advantec crafted a solution that met U-Haul's hardware, software and logistical requirements:
- A series of SKUs were established to accommodate the three specific hardware configurations and eight images
- Each time U-Haul updated a software image or revised a hardware configuration a new SKU was established, thus allowing tracking of each configuration for service purposes
- Advantec created an asset tag program so that installation technicians could identify specific hardware/software configs by reading a label on the outside of the computer chassis
- A custom web site was established to allow for administration of all orders, Bills of Material, ship dates, Proofs-of-Delivery, installation schedules, and payments for A/R reconciliation
- As many as 80 computers per day shipped to locations throughout America
Benefits
By utilizing the easy-to-use custom web portal Advantec provided, U-Haul International was
able to efficiently manage its computer upgrade project. Thousands of locations received custom built PCs
from Advantec, on-site installations were simplified through the asset tagging program Advantec created,
and all information related to open and shipped orders was shared between Advantec and U-Haul. By choosing
Advantec U-Haul was able to focus on its core truck and space rental business and rely on Advantec as their
outsourced partner for their IT infrastructure upgrade.
